NEWS FROM THE MUSSELSHELL-- 2006 Tribute to fair chase, free range, hunting adventures

Randy Higgins-Outfitter , Dave Krieg-Client-- With muledeer taken on bow hunt with Musselshell Outfitters on private land in September 2006. Dave Krieg played 12 years with the Seahawks. During His years in Seattle Dave was the club's all-time leader in 31 categories. His NFL career totals rank in the top 10 among all-time NFL quarterbacks in four categories. Dave was inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in 2004. Dave is an ethical, fair-chase, free-range, hunter and was a pleasure to have in our hunting camp.

We just finished up another great season at Musselshell Outfitters and again took some great animals and again several that will go into the record books!! We are lucky to be in such a great area with private land with such high quality hunting. With the closing of our 2006 big game season in Montana I have to be thankful that the sport of fair-chase, free-range hunting is still alive and well. I do not mean thankful from a business standpoint as much as I mean thankful that sportsmen and sportswomen can still enjoy the adventure of a free-ranging hunt where animals still roam freely and are not fenced into an area which limits feeding areas, water, and travel. For those who enjoy shooting animals inside high fences, I would never argue that it is right or wrong. That is only a matter of opinion and doing what you enjoy is the the deciding factor.

With that being said, it is very important to not confuse the two different sports. Free-range, fair chase hunting is the hunting of animals that have no restrictions on movements, feed, or water. A free-ranging animal is not fenced into a thousand acres, ten thousand acres, or fifty thousand acres. A free-ranging animal has access to any feed, water, or area that it wishes to travel to. When you have a high fence surrounding an animal, the only feed and water that animal can get is what you put inside the enclosure. The animal is not free-ranging and this drastically changes the methods used to locate and harvest the animal.

Musselshell Outfitters have always supported a free-ranging, fair chase hunt for clients who book our services. Over the past two decades I have personally guided over a thousand clients on free-ranging, fair chase hunts. Over those years of hunting and guiding, I have come to realize that 99% of the clients I have guided and /or outfitted came to our hunting camp for the "adventure of the hunt." On a free-ranging, fair chase hunt you do not know what lies ahead. You do not know what you will see or if you will take an animal. What you see today, will most likely be different tommorrow. This is the essence of a "hunt." You are in search of the animal you wish to harvest. During this type of adventure there is no guarantee of taking an animal. If you are "guaranteed" to harvest an animal you are not hunting. Hunting does not come with guarantees of what will happen. If you already know that you are going to shoot a 6x6 elk tommorrow, then you do not need to "hunt" for it. Guaranteed harvest has no adventure. You already have it, it's guaranteed.

The adventure of the hunt is what makes free-range, fair chase hunting what it is. It's a big gamble. Will you locate the animal? Will the wind shift? Will you find the quality of animal that you seek during your hunting time?? How far will the shot be? If you spook the animal, how far will it go? Will you be able to find it again? This is an adventure and you do not know the outcome until it's over.

All you can do is play the odds. You can go to a good area for game. You can hunt with an experienced outfitter and guide. You can get up early and hunt all day. You can play the wind. You can practice year round with your bow or rifle. YOU CAN put the odds in your favor.
As a professional outfitter and guide for free-ranging, fair chase hunts that's what our ultimate job is; putting the odds in the clients favor. Experience, good hunting areas, and hard work are "the big secret." The animals that we, Musselshell Outfitters, put on our website each year are the result of "the big secret." With each animal, there is a story. Luck is a great thing to have. Without "the big secret" luck will be hard to find.

Take a young hunter on a free-ranging, fair chase hunt. They are the ones who will carry on the tradition.

2006 - T.R. with her very first deer taken with Musselshell Outfitters
Congratulations T.R. you will never forget this one!

I will now move on to highlights of the 2006 season. It would be impossible to cover all the exciting moments of the season on this website. Thanks to all our 2006 clients for hunting hard and congratulations on all the fine animals that were taken.

In 2006 our spring turkey season was very exciting. Several clients completed their grand slam while hunting with us. We had lots of action with turkeys gobbling good the entire season. The birds we hunt are true merriam's and are not mixed with any other species of turkey. In 2006 we also had some first time turkey hunters. We took birds from 7 yards to more than 50 yards. We had 100% shooting opportunity on spring turkey in 06!! If you are looking for a great merriam's hunt, give us a call. Hunts are limited and are booking up quickly. We have many references if you wish to talk to some or our past clients.

Our bow antelope started August 15 this year. We offered some water hole hunting for antelope at this time. While some clients did not harvest an antelope, we had very few clients who did not have a shooting opportunity. Hot, dry weather makes for great bow antelope hunting. This is a great hunt for a hunter looking to get a chance at a pope and young buck. If you are interested in this hunt please contact us, and feel free to talk to last years clients about the hunting opportunity.
Our early September bow only elk hunt started out with warm weather, but high quantities of elk. Some mornings we had clients in front of over 300 elk. One morning we saw 352 in one herd tightly grouped. Seeing the larger herds is exciting but actually makes getting bow range tough at times. That's alot of eyes and noses to detect you. We again had very high shooting opportunity on bull elk. We had a client take another 350 inch bull again in 2006!!! Be sure to notice the past quality of bulls that we are consistently taking from our camps!! We again had clients who saw some bull's in the 380-400 inch range. We also got one on video but not for long.

On all of the hunts we take clients from all walks of life. We have guided farmers, painters, builders, secret service agents, plumbers, doctors, attorneys, janitors, nurses, carpet layers, factory workers, police, FBI Agents, and models, just to name a few. All of our clients are of equal importance. We hunt no differently with one client than we do the next. In 2006 we were fortunate to have all great hunting clients who enjoyed a quality fair chase hunt. In 2006, we also had a couple clients who many people may have heard of. One was a professional quarterback for the Seattle Sea-Hawks for several years. Another was representatives from the "American Outdoorsman" TV Show which plays nationwide via the Mens Channel. Sometimes we all hear stories about well known people not being hard hunters. Some people are just not cut out for the rigors of a true fair chase hunt. From personal experience I will say that all our clients in 2006 were ethical, hardworking, and came to hunt hard. As a licensed guide and outfitter for over 20 years I was impressed to see the patience and positive attitudes that make bowhunters successful.

Our rifle muledeer, whitetail, and antelope hunts were again very action packed and successful in 2006. We had well over 150% shooting opportunity on all our rifle hunts in 2006!!!! Most of our clients passed up many animals on the rifle hunt before taking the one they were looking for. This type of hunting is great as it allows the smaller buckes to grow larger for next year. They will not grow bigger in the freezer!! If you are interested in a great rifle hunt for muledeer, whitetail or antelope give us a call.

In summary the 2006 hunting season was very successful and many nice animals were taken with bow and rifle. Many clients from 2006 and past years are already booked for the 2007 season. Anyone who is looking for a quality Montana hunt should check out Musselshell Outfitters. We have hundreds of references and have been in business from the same camp for 15 years. We take alot of pride in our service and our reputation and will be here for many years to come. Don't be left out, you will never regret hunting in the Bull Mountains with Musselshell Outfitters!! "One of these days is today." Check us out, call our past clients.
